Starting the Year Strong

The 2020-2021 school year is here! Although COVID-19 has stopped us from being able to start in person, the GEAR UP partnership has been working on ways to provide you all with the best service we can and we look forward to working with you and your students in either their final year as middle school students or in their first year in high school!

What is GEAR UP again, you ask? It’s okay, it has been months since we have been able to really connect with our families! Here is a little refresher: GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The Renton School District applied for the GEAR UP grant in partnership with the University of Washington-Seattle, and the Auburn, Kent and Tukwila School Districts. The goal of the grant is to dramatically increase the number of students who enter and succeed in post-secondary education. How do we do that? We provide in-class support, after-school tutoring, college and career exploration and navigation, workshops on financial aid and literacy, and we work alongside families to support students with their post-secondary dreams and goals. How does my child get into GEAR UP, you may be wondering? Exciting news! Your student is ALREADY a GEAR UP student! They have access to the GEAR UP programming right now!

Each high school and middle school has a Site Coordinator, who is happy to work with you and your student for the next five years to help achieve their dreams.

You can expect a monthly newsletter to be sent to you for general GEAR UP announcements, upcoming events, and other important to information to gear your student up for success!

Did You Know?

By 9th grade, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores. We may be starting off virtually, but your child’s attendance is crucial for their success in high school and beyond!
