Credit Recovery
In the Renton School District, students may recover credit for courses that they took but did not pass through our online partner, Imagine Learning Edgenuity. Students in ninth through twelfth grade who have previously failed a course can take an online course, free of charge to recover credit required for graduation.
How do I recover credit?
- Students use Imagine Learning Edgenuity, an online platform for all credit recovery courses.
- To enroll in credit recovery, students must:
- Have previously attempted the course, which includes having been present for at least 30 days in the class in which an F was received; AND
- Have received an “F” in the course.
- All in-person students should only enroll in one credit recovery course at a time unless specifically approved by the Principal and Chief of Schools. This limit does not apply for students in the ALE all-virtual program at Talley High School.
- There are no pre-tests for students across the district in credit recovery.
- Accessing pre-tests for an individual student to make the course shorter (potentially resulting in skipping core learning) requires approval from the Principal and Chief of Schools and makes the course ineligible for NCAA course requirements.
- Students need 80% completion and earn an actual grade above 60% (equivalent to 75% on completed work) to retrieve credit.
- After a student successfully recovers credit, the grade of the first attempt (likely an F) remains on the transcript.
- To accelerate students on their path to graduation, we set an end date of 6 weeks after the start of the course, but that can be extended if needed.
- Unit tests (approx 5 - 6 per course) need to be unlocked by mentors, administered, and proctored in a supervised environment by Renton School District teaching staff during the school year.
- Students at Lindbergh, Renton, Hazen, and Talley In-Person require approval from Principal and Chief of Schools to enroll in an Imagine Learning Edgenuity course for initial credit (not credit recovery) for a course they have not attempted. Using credit recovery for initial credit is rare and will not be allowed during the summer.
The Renton School District has contracted with the online provider Edgenuity to offer credit-recovery courses for high school students, free of charge, who have failed a course required for graduation.
There are a limited number of seats available for free credit recovery classes. Seat priority will be given to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores.
Students must meet with their school counselor to determine if they are eligible for credit recovery and what classes they need to take.
