Media Streaming

Media Streaming Information

We should always carefully consider the instructional goals of showing movies or videos in any
classroom setting.

Media streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime should not be used
on district computers or devices. Their service agreements indicate that they may be used only
for private, in-home, non-commercial use (school use is considered “commercial” in this
context).

If educators want to stream media in classroom, possibilities include:

  • YouTube (but not YouTube Premium)
  • Purchasing a DVD and playing in the classroom -- classroom use only (not gym, which would require an expensive public performance license), more details in the Classroom Use of Videos from the American Library Association. Schools have external DVD players available in their libraries for classroom use.

Please remember that DVD use in the classroom must comply with copyright fair terms which requires that media be used solely in conjunction with face to face instruction.  Media use outside of this purpose requires a movie license.
