The Office of the Superintendent (OSPI) has advised school districts to "engage their communities over the next year with a goal to reduce distractions during instructional time and determine a path for restricting cell phone and smart device use in class by the start of the 2025–26 school year".

The goal of the district is to ensure students are focused on learning and not distracted during the school day.

Yes,  but they should remain out of sight and silent in a student selected location (ex: backpack, locker, etc.).

Students may also wear smart watches and smart glasses, as long as they are not used for communication.

Exceptions to classroom cell phone restriction will be considered at the school level under the following circumstances.

• IEP or 504 indication
• Students who have medical needs that rely on a smart device
• Partnership with families around student safety
• Language needs 

Parents should avoid contacting students directly during the school day when possible. Urgent messages can be directed to the main office. 

During school trips, the general grade level guidance applies, however special permission may be given for specific approved cell phone use.

During sports or extracurricular activities, considerations regarding responsible use and digital citizenship should be made for any cell phone use.

The guidance applies to all personal student devices including cell phones, smart glasses/headphones, and other related technology.

Smart watches may be worn, but not used for communication during the specified restriction times.

Per the guidance provided by our Safety and Security department, students may contact their parents in the event of an emergency at times designated by their teacher. Teachers will follow safety protocols established by the district and guide students to appropriate use. Students will have opportunities to practice appropriate use during drills.
