RSD substitutes are a critical and vital part of our team! We rely on our substitute employees to ensure a high-quality, continuous educational experience for our students when regular employees must miss work. Plus, our subs are among the highest paid in the region. With flexible schedules, you can work when you want to, where you want to.
All substitutes are also eligible to accrue sick leave and become eligible for full medical, dental and vision benefits!
Certificated Substitutes (Click here to apply!)
Certificated substitutes are fully certified (they have their Washington State Teaching License) and fill in for classroom teachers for varying periods of time – as short as half a day or up to 89 days in a long-term assignment). Certificated subs are able to select among available jobs daily to choose locations, grade levels or subject areas that best match their skills, training and preferences.
Emergency Certificated Substitutes (Click here to apply!)
Emergency Certificated substitutes do not yet hold a Washington State Teaching License, but have experience working with students as an aid, day care worker, tutor or related experience. Like certificated subs, they fill in for teachers who are absent and are able to select among available jobs daily to choose locations, grade levels or subject areas that best match their skills, training and preferences.
Additional Perks for Certificated and Emergency Certificated Subs:
- Certificated substitutes can earn up to $250+* per day ($264+ for retiree subs) for a full-day assignment!
- NEW! Certificated subs earn full teacher pay after 20 days in the same assignment (starting at $319 per day and more depending on your education and years of experience)
- NEW! Certificated subs who commit to 630 hours for the year (90 full days of work) are eligible to receive full benefits from DAY ONE of work
- Substitutes receive generous bonuses for their commitment to working in RSD. Below are the number of assignments a certificated sub must work and the bonus amount they will earn for working those assignments.
- 25-50 Substitute Assignments $750
- 51-75 Substitute Assignments $750
- 76-100 Substitute Assignments $1,000
- 101+ Substitute Assignments $5,000
Subs can earn up to $7,500 in bonuses each year!

Paraprofessional Substitutes (Click here to apply!)
Paraprofessional substitutes work directly with students to enhance learning under the guidance and supervision of a certificated teacher. Duties may include one-on-one or small group tutoring, supporting student behavior interventions, assisting special education students so that they can engage in learning, and general student supervision. Paraprofessional substitutes do not need any special licensure and training is provided.
Additional Perks:
- Paraprofessional subs earn sick leave and, upon working 630 hours are eligible for full benefits (medical, dental, vision).
- After working 20 assignments, you will receive a $500 signing bonus!
Paraprofessional Substitute Pay:
Special Education Assignments: $26.16 per hour
General Assignments: $25.38 per hour
