Highly Capable Program Overview
The Program Philosophy
The Renton School District believes that students who have been identified as highly-capable should have the opportunity to develop their strengths and talents through a rigorous academic program which enriches and extends the adopted curricula; honors students’ unique gifts, interests, and learning styles; and promotes higher-order, creative, and critical thinking.
The Program Goals
- Provide an opportunity for highly-capable learners to interact with peers of like abilities in order to promote a healthy self-concept relative to their giftedness.
- Provide an environment which encourages divergent thinking, creative problem-solving, and higher-level thinking.
- Provide leadership and participatory opportunities which will enhance the community and society.
- Provide opportunities for self-directed learning.
Our work is influenced by the National Association For Gifted Children’s (NAGC) programming standards. With differentiation as a focus, teachers implement the Washington State English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core Standards as well as other content area standards. Teachers also use their knowledge of students and on-going assessments to provide multiple mediums in which students can show their knowledge and skills based on their strengths and areas for growth.
