Dear Highlands Families:

Highlands Elementary School is a culturally-rich community that is committed to helping each student achieve academic and personal excellence. Our teaching staff is highly qualified and we are continually learning and growing professionally in order to serve the needs of each student.

We use a schoolwide Response to Intervention (RTI) system in our school to ensure that students receive academic instruction in reading and math that matches their academic levels and need. Students receive 90 minutes of instruction in reading each day with extended learning for students needing additional support. Students also receive a minimum of 60 minutes of math instruction with additional support as needed.

We also have a school-wide positive behavioral support plan. Students are taught the Guidelines for Success and recognized for their positive choices which will lead to overall success at school. The Guidelines for Success are:

    * Be Respectful
    * Be Responsible
    * Be Safe
    * Persevere
    * Cooperate with others

Students also receive instruction in music, physical education, science, social studies, and health. We believe that each student has the capacity to grow and learn the skills that will help them become successful adults. Our desire is to support them and to build a partnership with our families and community in achieving this goal.

You may hear from your child this year that school lunches include more fruits and vegetables than ever before. The Federal School Lunch Program now requires each child who purchases or receives a school lunch to take a serving of fruits or vegetables as part of their lunch.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have concerns, questions or feedback about our programs here at Highlands.

Welcome to a year of learning and growth!
