Seventh Grade Electives
At least one year of band experience is required. Students will learn to rehearse and perform concerts band music as well as music fundamentals (tone, rhythm, scales, and reading music). Students will be expected to provide their own instruments except for larger, less common instruments. Students will perform in concerts and events at Nelsen.
One to two years’ experience on string instrument required. Focuses on group and individual technique and using increasingly complex songs in a variety of styles. The group will have a number of performances, and students have additional opportunities to perform for special events. Students are expected to provide their own instruments.
Student will develop good vocal techniques, learn basics of sight-reading, music theory, and explore various periods in music history while preparing for a variety of performances. Choir students will build sight-reading skills, basic music theory knowledge, vocal techniques and performance skills.
Student will enhance self-image by providing a positive, creative and visually stimulating classroom environment. A variety of creative activities will be explored including drawing, painting and clay work.
Family & Consumer Science
Student will set and achieve personal goals, be a leader, understand finances and create a successful budget, discover what careers might interest them, complete a sewing project, apply math to real-world situations, learn how nutrition applies to her/himself, cook in a team, and apply skills they will use in the workforce.
HALF YEAR – Semester 1 - Acting
Students in drama learn the skills & techniques needed to improve their acting, no matter their experience. Students play games to help build acting skills and rehearse and perform in class. Students also learn how to analyze a performance & encourage each other through giving feedback.
Half Year – Semester 2 – Technical Design
Students in drama learn the skills & techniques needed to understand & produce everything for a play. Students will learn scripting (6th grade), the basics of each area of the theatre; costumes, set, lights, sound, makeup (7th grade) and begin to develop their ability to make a cohesive design for a production (8th grade). All aspects of the theatre that work with actors on the stage.
HALF YEAR – Semester 1 - Robotics
A robot must move, sense its surroundings and respond to what it senses, beyond that, you can make them do anything. Will you make a digital pet? A sumo-bot champion? A better robotic vacuum? First get it moving, then add sensors, then… continue building and completing various challenges.
HALF YEAR – Semester 2 – App Designer
Smart phones are changing the way we interact with others and the world around us. Create your own apps while learning about the importance of layout and user experience. Take advantage of the computing power and all the sensors packed into these devices to change the world.
Leadership will be open to all students, but teacher recommendation will be required. Students will assist in planning school-wide activities such as dances, fundraisers, and maintaining the building bulletin boards. They will enhance their leadership abilities in communication, collaboration, planning and human relations. The class may be one or two semesters.
We will be covering these subjects in the class Social media safety, Youth civics, Physical Awareness & Movement, Yew. Etiquette! Beyond table manners, “High School 101”, Creative writing & The Real World, Social skills in Society.
