6th Grade Electives
Open to 6th graders who like music and want to learn how to play a band instrument. This is the time to start if you want to be a member of a unique group of dedicated students. Students will also learn how to read music. This class is appropriate for students with no playing experience as well as those who have played before. When you sign up for this class, you will perform at concerts for your parents, relatives and friends. Students should provide their own instruments, though some instruments may be available from the school. Concerns about ability to get an instrument should be directed to the band teacher at: email@example.com.
Open to 6th graders who like music and want to learn one of the string instruments found in an orchestra. This is the time to start if you want to learn to play! Students will learn how to read music, as well as playing an instrument. Learn to play many pieces in different styles. Appropriate for students with absolutely no experience, as well as those who have played before. Students do not need to know how to read music to start in orchestra. You will get to perform in concerts. Students should provide their own instrument. Some instruments could be available from the school. Choir is open to all students who enjoy singing! Students will build sight-reading skills, basic music theory knowledge, vocal techniques, and performance skills. The choir will sing a balance of classical, folk, and popular music and will participate in school concerts.
Students explore a wide range of art media in this class which includes drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, ceramics and sculpture. They study artists from many cultures and apply this knowledge as they create art. Students create personal, expressive artwork.
HALF YEAR – Semester 1 - Acting
Students in drama learn the skills & techniques needed to improve their acting, no matter their experience. Students play games to help build acting skills and rehearse and perform in class. Students also learn how to analyze a performance & encourage each other through giving feedback
HALF YEAR – Semester 2 – Technical Design
Students in drama learn the skills & techniques needed to understand & produce everything for a play. Students will learn scripting (6th grade), the basics of each area of the theatre; costumes, set, lights, sound, makeup (7th grade) and begin to develop their ability to make a cohesive design for a production (8th grade). All aspects of the theatre that work with actors on the stage.
Principles of Leadership
In this class you will learn about what it means to earn the title of leader through servant leadership. Leadership is all about relationships, so we will be in groups a lot—discussing, working on projects, taking on challenges, and reflecting on learning. This will be a chance for you to grow confidence, get to know other students at Nelsen, be challenged and have fun
