Dear Benson Hill Families,
We are already near the end of the first trimester of the school year, and looking ahead to parent-teacher conferences in November. As the days become cold and wet, please be sure your children wear their coats every day, and have hats and gloves to keep warm. We go outside to play almost every day!
During the first two months of school teachers worked hard to assess students in math and reading and to provide support as needed. After conferences we will begin after school tutoring in reading on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm for identified students. You will be notified with additional information if your child qualifies for this service. After school tutoring for ELL students began on October 18.
November 4 is a work day for teachers to prepare for conferences. This is a no-school day for students. Conference days are November 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23. We will have early dismissal at 11:30am each day. We use standards-based reporting, which helps us accurately measure student progress toward common core state standards. Parents will also be given a document with grade level standards.
Conferences are a very important opportunity for you to talk one-on-one with your child’s teacher about your child’s progress. Conference notices will be sent home with your children soon. Please plan to be here.
PTA will also host a Movie Night on Thursday, November 17at 6pm.
Here are some important tips to help you prepare for a successful conference:
1. Talk to your child in advance of their conference. Ask how they are doing in school. Share your child’s perspective with their teacher.
2. Write down any questions you have so you don’t forget to ask if the teacher doesn’t cover it.
3. Know how you can support your child at home to insure academic and behavioral success.
4. Be sure the teacher knows the best way to communicate with you and that you have teacher contact information.
5. Be here on time and stick to your scheduled time.
We look forward to seeing you at conferences.
We will celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 10 at 2:10pm with a special assembly honoring our veterans. All current and retired service members are invited to attend our assembly. We will have veterans from our community as speakers, as well as performances by our students. Everyone is welcome to attend!
Student Council is up and running. Class representatives and six fifth grade Student Council leaders have been elected. This group of Bobcats will help lead service projects and events at school. Spirit days are coming up soon! Student Council will also be coordinating a food drive for needy families in our community in December.
If you are in need of retakes, please bring your packet with you on November 8th. Additional forms are available in the office.
The RSD Curriculum & Instruction Dept. will be hosting an Elementary Report Card Information Session for FAMILIES. There are two dates to choose from: Thursday, November 3 from 9-10am or Tuesday, November 8 from 6-7pm. Both sessions will be held in the board room at KEC. Child care will be provided, and translators will be on site.
