When a Chromebook hasn't been updated, many apps and features can be affected. Follow the steps below to check on and update your Chromebook OS.

• Turn on your Chromebook.
• Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi and log on.
• At the bottom right, select the time
• Select Settings (wheel icon)
• At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.
• Under "Google Chrome OS," you'll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.
• Select Check for updates.
• If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

Is it plugged into an active electrical socket? Sometimes there is a switch on the wall that turns the electric socket of/off. Make sure that switch is turned on. 

Does the charger have a good connection? Some RSD Chromebooks have a spot on each side that you can charge from. If you have a Chromebook with that option and one side is not charging, try the other side.

Does it have a green light but won’t turn on?  Do a hard re-start. Hold the power button and the refresh key for about a minute. The refresh key on a Chromebook is in the upper left-hand corner of the keyboard and looks like a circle with an arrow at the end of it. Let go of the button and if the Chromebook comes back on with a large exclamation point, press the power button to restart it.

Is there a red light on while it is plugged in and charging? If there is no light, the battery is completely drained. When that happens, the Chromebook will not turn on, even if it is charging. Let it charge in an active electrical outlet for 15 minutes.

If no light appears you may have other issues. Please talk to your teacher or contact the Technology Resource Specialist for your school by selecting your school name from the menu on the left.

However, families may reach out to their school to receive a Students & Families Technology Resource Guide where they can find detailed information on how to log in. 

Try taking a picture of something to determine whether you are having an issue with the camera itself or a problem with the application you are using, i.e., Zoom, SeeSaw, etc. If you can’t take a picture successfully, please talk to your teacher or contact the Technology Resource Specialist for your school by selecting your school name from the menu on the left.

Is the Chromebook volume is to the max?

Still didn’t get louder? Getting a pair of ear pods with a microphone should significantly increase sound quality.

Double check the Keyboard Language setting by hovering your mouse over the lower right-hand corner of the Chromebook screen. If the word “keyboard” doesn’t automatically appear, click the gear picture to get to the Chromebook settings. They keyboard should be set to US unless you have selected a specific language.

Press Ctrl+Shift+refresh (which is the arrow going in a circle located in upper left hand corner) until you get it to the orientation you want.

Do a hard restart. Hold the power button and the refresh key for about a minute. The refresh key on a Chromebook is in the upper left-hand corner of the keyboard and looks like a circle with an arrow at the end of it. Let go of the button and if the Chromebook comes back on with a large exclamation point, press the power button to restart it. 

If your screen is cracked, you will need to swap out your device for a new one. Please talk to your teacher or contact the Technology Resource Specialist for your school by selecting your school name from the menu on the left.

Check in with your Wi-Fi Carrier. The problem could be related to modem/router settings, parental restrictions, or security/access controls. Contact your Wi-Fi carrier for advice on modem/router settings.

You will not be able to print at home from a Chromebook. If you would like to print something, you will need to log into a PC to access your Google Drive or One Drive. Another option is to email the document to yourself and print from a computer with printing capabilities.
