If the Nov. 5, 2019 School Construction Bond measure passes, the district will build an additional elementary in the northeast section (Highlands/Sunset/Hazen High area) of Renton School District.

NEW CONSTRUCTION (Why another elementary school is needed):

A new elementary school in the northeast (Highlands/Sunset/Hazen High) area of the district will accommodate students now and in the future: Current elementary schools in the northeast section of the district are at or above capacity, and there are plans by the City of Renton to construct hundreds of new housing units over the next few years. Families and businesses continue to move into the area and housing and apartment complexes are being constructed at record pace. The welcomed improvement in our local economy brings more jobs and families moving into the area for good schools, city amenities and quality of life. It also means more students enrolling in our schools.

Student enrollment in the district has increased by more than 2,200 students in the past 10 years as families move into the area for first-rate schools, affordable housing and quality of life. Our elementary school populations have grown as families have children, and new families move into the district. Thanks to voter support, the district opened an additional middle school (Risdon Middle School) in 2016, reducing overcrowding at McKnight Middle School by half. Voters also approved construction of a new 28,000 square-feet/12 classroom new at Hazen High in 2012, providing additional space at our most populated high school. Lindbergh and Renton High have capacity to accommodate students now and well into the future.

The building of an additional elementary school in the northeast section of the district will accommodate the large number of current kindergarten through 5^th-grade students in that area (nearly 50% of all elementary students in the district attend one of the five elementary schools in that area). City of Renton construction projects will increase housing in the area in just short period of time. We need room in elementary schools in that area of the district now, and to be ready for many new families who will move into the new housing.

Voters have opportunity to keep schools in great working condition, build much-needed new elementary school

Renton School District voters will decide on an important ballot measure to support student learning on the November 5, 2019 ballot. Even with approval of the measure, tax-rates for district property owners will continue to decrease.

Building for Excellence School Building Construction Bond will allow for important projects at nearly every school in the district including:

construction of a much-needed, additional elementary school in the fast-growing northeastern (Highlands/Sunset/Hazen High) area of the district
additional science classrooms at high schools
preschool classrooms
renovations and upgrades to other schools such as
- roofs and boilers
- safety and security
- school playground and athletic fields
and much more

Voters overwhelmingly approved this measure on the Feb. 12, 2019 ballot; but an additional 400 votes were needed to validate the measure. With the obvious support of voters, Renton School Board members are providing an opportunity for more voters to vote to approve the measure and will place the measure back on the Nov. 5, 2019 ballot.
