Renton School District Social Media Community Standards

Renton School District social media Facebook and Instagram accounts celebrate learning, share important updates, highlight achievements and build strong connections with our community. We value open, respectful dialogue to ensure our social media platforms remain a welcoming space for students, families, staff and community members to connect and share. We ask all users to interact in a way that reflects mutual respect, even when opinions differ.

We also ask that engagement on posts are respectful of our Renton community and are consistent with our Equity Policy. Individuals who do not follow the social media guidelines could have their posts removed, and/or be blocked from the sites. We reserve the right to remove inappropriate comments, including comments that have obscene language or sexual content; threaten, attack or insult any person, staff member, or organization; violate the legal ownership interest of another party; promote illegal activity; promote commercial services or products; or are not topically related to the particular posting; or contain contents that promote, foster, or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation. We will not, however, remove otherwise permissible comments based on viewpoint.

All content on our social media sites is a public record, subject to retention and disclosure. We do not express approval or support for the views expressed by third-parties.

Respectful Engagement and Content Moderation

Our district welcomes thoughtful feedback, comments and questions on its social media platforms. Users may disagree with ideas, but all interactions must remain civil and respectful. Comments may be removed without notice if they:

  • Include personal attacks, insults, threats or harassment
  • Contain defamatory, vulgar, offensive or otherwise inappropriate language
  • Promote or suggest illegal activity
  • Contain spam, harmful links, repetitive and/or unrelated content
  • Share false, misleading or libelous information
  • Advocate for commercial activity or private business interests
  • Include direct or indirect links to peer-to-peer payment platforms or crowdfunding requests
  • Pose a security risk, such as suspected malware or phishing

In some cases, we may issue a reminder about our community standards, but warnings are not guaranteed before action is taken. Comments that violate these guidelines may be deleted or hidden at the discretion of the district, consistent with the tools available on each social media platform. Repeated or serious violations may result in users being blocked or banned from future engagement. Comments that imply or instigate violence, or appear criminal in nature, will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Protecting Privacy and Shared Content

We ask users to not post private information such as addresses, phone numbers or student records. Users should only share original content or content they have permission to post. The district reserves the right to remove and/or hide content that is not original or may violate copyright laws. By tagging Renton Schools or its schools in a post, you grant permission for the district to share or repost that content on its official social media accounts.
