Directory information to military recruiters
Law requires giving student information to military recruiters
Parents can opt-out with letter
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), requires that local educational agencies to provide, upon request, certain student information to military recruiters and/or institutions of higher education (ESEA Section 8528). The law (107-110, Section 9528 of the ESEA “No Child Left Behind Act,”) also allows students and parents an opportunity to opt out of having this information released. To request personal information not be released to military recruiters, please send a letter to your child’s school, clearly indicating your child’s full name and address, asking that directory information not be released to outside organizations or military recruiters.
