Renton School District

Elementary Boundary Changes Aug. 2023

We’re building a new elementary school in the Highlands/Sunset area of our district at 1075 Duvall Ave NE, Renton. The new Hilltop Heritage Elementary School will open this fall as we start the 2023-2024 school year.

Opening a new school requires that we also shift the boundaries of six nearby elementary schools. The new elementary school boundaries take effect as we start the 2023-2024 school year on August 30, 2023 (Sept. 5 for kindergarten students). Please see the Frequently Asked Questions tab below to learn more about the elementary boundary changes.

There are no changes to middle and high school boundaries.

Elementary schools that will have boundary changes:

  • Hazelwood Elementary
  • Highlands Elementary
  • Hilltop Heritage Elementary
  • Honey Dew Elementary
  • Kennydale Elementary
  • Maplewood Heights Elementary
  • Sierra Heights Elementary
Communication to families whose boundaries are changing

On March 20, 2023, we emailed and mailed home a family-specific communication to all families whose school boundaries will change and whose students will attend a different elementary school beginning this fall. Families whose students attend the schools listed above, please check your email for information on whether your school changes next school year (if you do not receive an email regarding a change, your student remains in their current school).

How were the new boundaries determined

From November 2022 through March 2023, an Elementary Boundary Review Committee, made up of majority (10) family members from the six impacted elementary schools, school principals, and support staff, worked to consider many important factors as they developed proposals for boundaries for the new school and six nearby elementary schools. Family and public input was gathered as part of the process through an in-person event and for weeks online. Learn more about their about their work.
