21st Century Skills
Students who are college and career ready must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary to successfully complete entry-level, credit-bearing college courses, and/or participate in certificate or workplace training programs. As the Renton School District seeks to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to meet the demands of tomorrow’s workplace it is even more critical to develop career readiness curricula that are not only aligned with State and Federal CTE standards and Common Core standards but are also relevant to the development of some of the most important skills cited by employers.
21st Century Skills are in three broad areas:
• Learning and Innovation Skills
• Information, Media and Technology Skills
• Life and Career Skills
In the Renton School District, students engage in activities that support the development of 21st Century Skills in all CTE courses and related functions. Special emphasis is placed on involving students in community events, leadership opportunities, and through worksite/work-based learning activities. Students partner with community service organizations, the Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Renton to support and enhance the development of these skills.
