2017-2018 Welcome Back to School message

  • District Mission Priorities Values Dear Renton Families,

Service.  Excellence.  Equity.  These are three of my core values as a leader.  But these words are more than just a mere slogan.  These are my promise to you, our students, our staff, and our community.  As the Renton School District’s new superintendent, I will work hard each and every day to ensure that the RSD embodies these core values and look forward to working with you to help us realize this vision for our students.

Returning home can bring a sense of excitement and anticipation.  These were two of the feelings I felt in 2001 when I was hired to teach at Renton High School, my alma mater.  Sixteen years later, I truly believe I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to continue to work in a community and for a school district that have given so much to me.  Despite the passing of time, the same feelings of excitement and anticipation remain to this very day.  Furthermore, I am beyond humbled to now have the chance to serve as superintendent.

Prior to being named superintendent, I was the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching.  Before working at the district office, I was a high school teacher at Kent-Meridian High School and Renton High School, assistant principal at Hazen High School, and the principal at Renton High.  Beyond K-12, I also taught undergraduate courses in the College of Education at Washington State University.  WSU is a very special place to me (Go Cougs!) as this is where I earned all three of my degrees and maintain a relationship with the university to this day.

During the superintendent transition process, I have had the opportunity to meet with many parents/guardians and community members.  These interactions have reinforced how supportive our parents and community are when it comes to meeting the needs of our students.  It is this partnership between schools, parents, and community that will take the Renton School District to new levels of excellence.  Your support is essential and I challenge all of us to continue to not only serve as advocates for our own students (in my case my own daughter and son) but for all our students in the RSD.  To that end, you are always welcome to visit, participate, and volunteer at our schools.  Additionally, never hesitate to contact our principals, district leaders, and/or me should you have any questions or concerns.  Frequent and effective communication will remain a hallmark of the Renton School District.

Come August 30, the Renton School District’s outstanding teaching and support staff will welcome your student to the 2017-18 school year.  Our staff has spent the summer engaged in professional learning and preparing our buildings for the first day of school.  It will be a busy year and we are ready to get to work!  As I begin this new adventure of serving as superintendent, I look forward to partnering with you during this school year and beyond.
