Vision For Science Instruction

  • The Renton School District is currently in the process of transitioning to the 2013 Washington State Science Learning Standards, also known as the NGSS or Next Generation Science Standards.  Through grants from Washington State, teachers have been receiving professional learning on the new standards and the associated instructional shifts.  Teacher committees have also begun working collaboratively to develop new course sequences, pacing guides and creating new NGSS lessons and units.  In the 2016- 2017 school year, one new NGSS unit will be implemented in grades 6-8 and a committee of high school teachers will continue the collaborative work to develop the new high school science course sequence and course maps so that our students are prepared for the new comprehensive NGSS assessments in 2018.  At the elementary school level, teachers will engage in professional development to gain further understanding of NGSS and the concepts/shifts that will impact classroom instruction.
