Vision For Math Instruction
In the Renton School District math classroom communities are intentionally designed to support students in developing the skills, habits and attitudes identified in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the embedded Standards for Mathematical Practice. Students engage with rigorous, content-rich tasks which draw upon everyday mathematics situations, and which are designed to have multiple entry points and solution paths. In this supportive environment students learn by sharing their thinking with one another, probing for understanding, challenging others’ ideas, and through seeking to master multiple ways to conceptualize mathematical ideas and solution paths. As they move through their years in the Renton School District, students develop a positive math identity. Students see themselves as capable math thinkers able to use mathematics to solve problems. They appreciate how mathematical thinking helps them to successfully navigate a complex world.
