Honey Dew Elementary School increased its recycling rate from 25% to 45%. The school established a student Green Team made up of third through fifth grade students who gave compliments in the classroom and morning announcement "shout-outs" to those successfully recycling. The school kicked off lunch room recycling in early 2017. The Green Team hosted two events - a recycling awareness event and a school clean up day where the team picked up litter from the playground.
Honey Dew is committed to provide a safe and civil educational environment for all students, employees, volunteers, and patrons-one free from harassment, intimidation, and bullying. RCW 28A.300.285 defines harassment, intimidation, or bullying as an intentional, electronic, written, verbal or physical act that: Physically harms a student or damages the student’s property. Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education Is so severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment. Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school. This month, students are beginning Anti-Bullying lessons in class with our school counselor, Amber Franklin.
In classrooms last month, we discussed Brain in the Hand, a technique developed by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, MD that teaches students and teachers about the importance of self-calming and re-gathering. This model demonstrates using parts of their hands to identify which area(s) of the brain are impacted when a student becomes upset, or has “flipped their lid.” Practicing Brain in the Hand encourages students to make use of positive time-out spaces and think about self-regulation proactively.
At Honey Dew we are a community of learners and leaders achieving excellence.
