The Renton Technology Coordinating Council (RTCC) created the Internet Filtering Committee to advise on changes to the district internet filtering policy. The Internet Filtering Committee met January 30th, 2014 for the first time to work toward a community stance on internet filtering for our staff and students. In November 2016 the Committee decided that it completed its work as a stand-alone subcommittee of the Renton Technology Coordinating Council (RTCC) and in the future will meet with RTCC as needed. An overview of the committee meeting decisions include:
January 30, 2014 The committee reviewed approximately sixty of the 120 Websense categories and recommended approximately 25 changes.
April 22, 2014 The committee completed review of the Websense category list and reviewed implementation results of the first set of recommendations.
November 13, 2014 The committee reviewed requests to unblock categories submitted to Webmaster Barbara Folmer. Also reviewed new filtering categories and discussed a proposed district survey.
April 30, 2015 The committee reviewed the current appeal process to block/unblock sites as well as requests from staff to unblock certain websites. The committee decided on a biannual meeting and also reveiwed the success of the IFC.
November 17, 2015 The committee reviewed the article " Are School Internet Filters the Forgotten Equity Battleground?" as well as the new Responsible Use Policy. Websense categories were reviewed as well as any requests to block or unblock sites.
April 18, 2016 After a review of the fall meeting minutes, the committee discussed the upcoming replacement of internet filtering software. Decision was made to allow YouTube for all students and to set high school student permission levels to the same a staff.
November 28, 2016 This is the final IFC meeting as the group will be moved into the larger RTCC group.
