Law requires giving student information to military recruiters

Parents can opt out with letter

Federal law requires school districts to release student names, addresses and telephone numbers to military recruiters upon their request. The law (107-110, Section 9528 of the ESEA “No Child Left Behind Act,”) also allows students and parents an opportunity to opt out of having this information released. To request personal information not be released to military recruiters, please send a letter to your child’s school, clearly indicating your child’s full name and address, asking that directory information not be released to outside organizations or military recruiters.

    Weapons prohibited on school property

State law RCW 9.41.280 states that it is unlawful for any person to carry or possess a dangerous weapon or firearm on public school premises. Firearms/weapons are not allowed in school; at school-sponsored activities; on school grounds or facilities; or on school-provided transportation. If a student brings a firearm/weapon to school, it will result in an immediate expulsion for no less than one calendar year, and notification of law enforcement and parents. Expulsions can be modified on a case-by-case basis pursuant to hearing provisions of Ch. 392-400 WAC. The confidential Renton School District weapons hotline is 425-204-2468.

Renton School District policy also prohibits laser pens and objects that look like weapons, such as toy guns and knives. Students or staff aware of weapons on campus and do not report the information to school authorities are subject to discipline.

Make sure your school has your primary phone number and email for emergency notifications

Renton School District uses a phone, text and email messaging system to notify parents of school closures, emergencies or other changes to the school day. The system also provides parents with information on student absences and tardiness, as well as important information directly from schools. To ensure you’re receiving these important calls and messages, make sure your school has your correct primary phone number and email address.
