TITLE I and LAP programs provide qualifying students extra help in reading and math to improve their academic achievement.

TITLE I

Title I provides federal money to schools with high needs based on free and reduced lunch percentages.

LAP - Learning Assistance Program

LAP provides state funds to schools based on their free and reduced lunch percentage and academic need. Some schools receive both Title I and LAP funding to assist student learning.

  • Students qualify for additional help based on test scores and classroom performance for Title I, and based on the WASL scores (grades 4 – 12) or District standards (K-3) for LAP.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Targeted Assistance Model Schools

Title I: In eligible schools students needing extra help to perform at grade level may receive assistance.

  • Students are referred, tested, and ranked in order of need.
  • Parents are notified when their child is eligible and give permission before their child is enrolled in the program.

LAP: Students who are below standard in reading or math are eligible to receive LAP services.

  • Qualified students may receive extra help in readiness skills, reading, and math to help them achieve the Washington State Learning Goals.
  • A targeted assistance model may include small group instruction, individual help, or specialized instruction.
  • All Renton Middle and High Schools receive LAP funds.

Benson Hill, Hazelwood, Maplewood Heights, Sierra Heights are Targeted Assistance Schools

Schoolwide Model Title I Schools:

A school must meet a minimum percentage (40%) of free and reduced lunch and have gone through a year-long planning process to implement a “Schoolwide” model.

  • Title I funds may be used to increase the academic achievement of all students in the school. Services are determined by each school’s detailed schoolwide plan.
  • Additional LAP services may be provided to those students not meeting reading or math standards.
  • Renton has nine schools that are Title I Schoolwide: Bryn Mawr, Campbell Hill, Cascade, Highlands, Kennydale, Lakeridge, Renton Park, Talbot Hill and Tiffany Park and Dimmitt Middle School.

NOTICE TO PARENTS OF STUDENTS RECEIVING TITLE I SERVICES

RIGHT TO REVIEW TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS

As a parent of a Title I student in the Renton School District, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

Whether the state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.

  • Whether OSPI has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances.
  • The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.
  • Whether any paraeducators provide instructional services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

If you would like to receive any of this information, please call Paul Apostle, Assistant Superintendent: Human Resources, (425)204-2370.
